Rotary’s Areas of Focus: Guiding Our Humanitarian Efforts

Rotary International has identified seven key Areas of Focus that serve as the foundation for all its humanitarian service projects worldwide. These areas guide clubs, including the Rotary Club of Bellville, in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today. The seven Areas of Focus are: Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Maternal and Child Health, Basic Education and Literacy, Economic and Community Development, and Environment.

By concentrating our efforts within these strategic areas, Rotary ensures that our projects are targeted, measurable, and sustainable, creating lasting positive impact in communities both locally and globally. Whether supporting peace-building initiatives, improving access to clean water, advancing maternal health, promoting education, strengthening economies, or protecting the environment, every Rotary project aligns with at least one of these Areas of Focus. This focused approach enables the Rotary Club of Bellville and our international partners to work efficiently and effectively toward a better world.

Global Grants: Transforming Communities Through Rotary’s Largest Humanitarian Projects

A Global Grant is one of Rotary International’s most powerful funding mechanisms, designed to support large-scale, sustainable humanitarian projects that address critical needs in communities around the world. Administered through Rotary Foundation, Global Grants provide funding of US$30,000 or more and are typically used for ambitious, high-impact initiatives in one of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus: Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Maternal and Child Health, Basic Education and Literacy, Economic and Community Development, and Environment.

These grants are collaborative in nature, requiring a partnership between at least two Rotary clubs — one in the country where the project is implemented (host club) and one outside that country (international partner club). This international cooperation ensures shared expertise, accountability, and long-term sustainability. Global Grants often involve community needs assessments, measurable objectives, and strong monitoring and evaluation frameworks to ensure lasting impact.

In the Rotary Club of Bellville, we actively participate in Global Grants to tackle significant challenges both locally and internationally, leveraging the collective strength of Rotary to create meaningful, enduring change in people’s lives.
